(Photo: Sean Sullivan/The Washington Post) On Friday, New Deal Democrats unveiled a sweeping blueprint for overhauling the election rules that have traditionally come under intense scrutiny from some progressives. The groups, which include many of the country’s most powerful advocates for the middle and lower classes, announced the plan at the Democracy Partners’ joint weekly meeting with the White House and Senate. The proposal differs from the Republicans’ proposals on campaign financing because it takes a closer look at the political processes described in these plans and sets out principles to be sold to voters.

The group, and some former members of Congress, hailed the proposal as an important step in “ensuring that our democratic institutions are doing our work” under Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate, while also promising as much as possible about how the country’s upcoming elections will last. Minority leaders have been calling on Congress to strip campaign-finance restrictions since before the 2014 midterm elections to keep voters trapped with politically explosive issues on hand, with Republicans making it even more difficult to block a presidential victory. The proposals also will address some of the country’s most divisive issues plaguing the middle and upper classes, including the effects of the economy, the health care issue and gun violence.
